Road Boring Services

Sometimes local or state agencies need access to underground to install water lines, gas lines, sewer, fiber optic cable, or other utilities. Our road boring services provide that access.

What Is Road Boring?

People use road boring, trenchless digging, and directional boring interchangeably to describe the process of providing underground access by drilling at a low angle, then spinning that bit horizontally to its destination. Once experts make a pathway and clear away debris, they pull pipelines or conduits back through the tunnel. We use self-contained rigs and remote units to provide the right access and capability for each project.

Why Choose Road Boring

Road Boring benefits all come from the fact it allows planners and facilitators to reach goals while leaving a minimal construction footprint. Trenching requires removing vegetation and tearing up the ground for the length of the installation.

With road boring, our experts can use one location to install multiple utility types. The only place that experiences a disturbance is the entry site where we set up directional drilling equipment.

Road Boring Benefits

Less commercial disruption

Debris and equipment doesn't pile up in front of businesses. Customers don't even know road boring is happening. Services aren't disrupted.

Reduced Traffic disruption

Because most of the activity happens underground, there's no need to block off roadways or redirect traffic during utility installation.

Fewer cleanup needs

Road boring causes much less debris than trenching. Trees and underbrush stay in place and no piles of dirt line the area.

Reduced environmental impact

Safely install utilities under wetlands and natural habitats without disrupting local plant and wildlife species.

How Directional Drilling Works

Striping Technology, L.P. has installed miles of conduit over the past decades using directional drilling and road boring. We start with the drill bit working through an entrance pit we can place out of the way of vehicle and pedestrian traffic to minimize disruptions.

Then, our experienced crews direct the pilot bore around existing utilities and other underground obstructions. Once it reaches its target exit point, we’ll enlarge the opening and pull utility conduit back through.

Pre-Plan bore path to avoid obstructions

02

Drill the pilot bore, with an experienced crew steering the bit

01

Enlarge the bore path if needed to accommodate conduit

02

Pull conduit into place

Conventional Boring, Horizontal Directional Drilling and Direct Pipe Installation

We offer safe, effective, environmentally-friendly options to install utilities and provide underground access, wherever you need it. Contact us for dependable, professional service.

Conventional Road Boring

With this method, we’ll create an entrance and exit pit, run the bore through, then install pipelines as needed.

Typical length of 50 to 100 feet
Often used for road and railroad crossings
Best for loose packed sediment

Directional Drilling

Install subsurface conduit over larger distances without disrupting surface structures and traffic.

Effective from 500 to 3,000 feet
Effective even under stream and river crossings
Provide access under sidewalks, roads, parking lots, and existing utilities
