Pavement Marking Removal

Traffic patterns change and old highway striping, road striping and pavement marking fades. Re-applying over old paint causes confusion. We offer pavement marking removal to refresh surfaces and keep drivers safe.

Line Striping Removal & Road Marking Removal

The process of pavement marking removal is as important as the end result. Choose the wrong method and you could end up with scarred pavement or inadequate substance removal. Striping Technology evaluates projects one client at a time. We’ll weigh factors like the type of pavement marking to be removed, surface condition, cost effectiveness and environmental impact.

When You Need Pavement Marking Removal

One of the most common reasons project facilitators call us for pavement marking removal is changing traffic patterns. Sometimes accident statistics indicate the need for change. Road expansion creates a need for adjusted signals, and pavement marking removal is needed before applying new.

During construction, traffic experts detour traffic to avoid work zones, and they need to create lane shifts. Pavement marking removal prepares surfaces to avoid confusion. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) requires existing marking be completely removed without creating unacceptable levels of pavement scarring. That’s where we come in.

Pavement Marking Removal Methods

Griding

Grinding is one of the most widely used, fastest, and least expensive ways to remove pavement marking. If you're not concerned about scarring, it might be the way to go.

Water Blasting

Remove markings without damaging the surfaces beneath with water blasting. This option takes longer than grinding, but keeps pavement and asphalt safe.

Sand Blasting

Direct silica or other particulates at concrete and asphalt to blast away dirt, debris, rust and surface paint, even if you need to power through several layers.

Covering

Covering involves black thermoplastic pavement marking or black-out tape. When you need a quick or temporary solution, covering hides lines and symbols rather than acting as pavement marking removal.

Questions that Decide Pavement Marking Removal Methods

Striping Technology, L.P. applies industry best practices when choosing the best method of pavement marking removal. Our pros evaluate your site and ask questions like these:

  • What type of material created the pavement marking in the first place?
  • What type of surface is underneath, and what shape is it in?
  • Why is the removal necessary?
  • How important is speed of pavement marking removal?
  • What’s the budget?
  • Will we be applying new marking, or does the surface just need the old removed?
  • How can we best minimize driver confusion and prevent accidents?

Specializing in Longline Removal & Special Markings Removal

Successful thermoplastic pavement marking can be complicated. The pavement temperature must be within an acceptable range for maximum durability and adhesion. Surfaces must be clean, dry, and debris free. We’ll use the right method to prepare your roadway or pavement, then apply thermoplastic markings using the right equipment so you get superior looks and durability.

Longline Removal

We have the crews and equipment to remove highway striping, road striping, edge striping and any other pavement marking.

Thermoplastic Directional Arrows
Thermoplastic Crosswalks
Stop & Yield Lines

Special Markings Removal

Remove legends, symbols, crosswalks and other pavement marking from road surfaces using specialized equipment that’s typically smaller than that used for longline removal.
